Island Sounds in the Global City: Caribbean Popular Music and Identity in New York by Ray Allen,
Island Sounds in the Global City maps the musical "Caribbeanization" of New York City, now home to the largest caribbean music and most diverse concentrations of Caribbean people in the world. Emphasizing the relationship of music to social identity, this volume surveys a rich mosaic of popular Caribbean styles, showing how these musics serve the dual function of defining a group's uniqueness caribbean music and creating bridges across ethnic boundaries. While Dominicans in Washington Heights think of merengue as their music caribbean music and El Barrio's Nuyoricans (New York -- born people of Puerto Rican descent) identify most closely with salsa, many Latin dance bands play both merengue caribbean music and salsa, often for the same audience. Brooklyn's Trinidadian community cherishes its calypso caribbean music and steel pan music while the borough's Jamaican residents claim reggae as their most significant artistic achievement -- yet both are components of Brooklyn's West Indian Carnival. As early as the 1940s, Greenwich Village clubs offered a variety of Latin caribbean music and West Indian musicians an opportunity to perform for white caribbean music and black North American audiences. Today, New York plays a pivotal role in providing Caribbean musicians with a global audience for their music.

Creating Their Own Space: The Development of an Indian-Caribbean Musical Tradition by Tina K. Ramnarine,
Characterized by fast-paced, highly danceable rhythms, Chutney is a fusion of traditional caribbean music and contemporary Indian caribbean music and Caribbean influences. With its roots in the OutsHindi folk songs performed at birth caribbean music and wedding ceremonies, Chutney has recently emerged in contemporary Indian-Caribbean life caribbean music and has gone largely unrecognized in the body of scholarly literature. In this volume Tina K. Ramnarine explores the evolution of Chutney caribbean music and introduces the emerging Indian-Caribbean genre into the arena of scholarly discourse about music. Through analysis of the music, Ramnarine provides insights into social processes, effects of the diasporic settlements, caribbean music and ways the music operates as a symbol of Indian-Caribbean identity. Some of the Indian elements in Chutney are not traditional, rather they are new ideas incorporated into the construction of the Indian-Caribbean identity. This introduction of new cultural elements is a common occurrence among people who have been transplanted to an unfamiliar geographical caribbean music and cultural environment.
